What to expect after breast augmentation

1. Bruising & swelling

Expect major bruising, swelling and soreness for at least 1~2 weeks. Swelling will reduce asymmetrically so do not panic if it happens. Typically, about 70% of the bruising and swelling is lost within 2 weeks, and most of the swelling will be gone in 3 months.

2. Medication

You will be prescribed with painkillers, stomach liners and antibiotics after your surgery. Make sure to take your medications as prescribed by your plastic surgeon.

3. Compression bras

You will be required to wear a compression bra for at least 2 months after your breast surgery. This will help maintain the shape of your new breasts and help your breast implants settle in nicely.

4. Breast massages

Post-op breast massages are not necessary anymore unless you have used smooth type breast implants for breast augmentation. In fact these days, most people opt for textured type breast implants which gives a more natural look and feel with a low risk for capsular contracture.

But just in case you have opted for smooth type implants, here’s how you should do your breast massages. But be warned that it’s going to hurt a fair bit though.

  1. Cup one hand over each breast and press downward then upward
  2. Push each breast toward the middle of your chest, hold, then pull breasts outward
  3. Place an open hand on each side of one breast and gently squeeze the breast before similarly squeezing the other breast
  4. Grab one shoulder with the opposite hand and use the arm to compress one breast and then the other

Extra breast augmentation aftercare tips for speedy recovery

1. Sunscreen

Make sure that your new breasts are not exposed to UV rays as much as possible. If you are planning to show some cleavage or going to wear a bikini for tanning, lather up your breasts with some good ol’ SPF. That includes the sunbed. There is risk of hyperpigmentation if you are not careful.

2. Eat a well-balanced diet

This means lots of fruits and vegetables, but not forgetting your meats. And stay away from sweets and processed food, obviously. Fruits such as pineapples, berries and apples are known to help reduce swelling. Vegetables, especially dark leafy greens like spinach and broccoli, and meats, preferably white meats, help expedite healing and fight infections.

But do abstain from daily activities and chores that require the use of your upper body. In short, get someone to cook and wash the dishes for you.

3. Sleep, sleep & sleep

Healing requires a lot of energy, so you’ll probably feel more tired than usual. Take lots of naps and sleep early at night. In fact, having a good night’s sleep is one of the best ways to accelerate your recovery process. The recovery period is the best time for you to do nothing! Well, with the exception of netflix.

4. Sleep laying on your back

The best and most suitable position for sleep after breast augmentation is laying on your back and elevated at 30~45°. This helps put your breasts in a relaxed position, exerting no strain or pressure on your chest, and helping your breast implants to settle.

5. Don’t go braless during the recovery period

Your new breasts need to be well supported for at least 2 months after your surgery in order to protect the newly augmented tissue while it heals. Therefore, always wear your compression bra (unless your are bathing) as they do a good job in keeping your breasts in place during recovery.

Yes, that includes sleeping with your compression bra on. This will prevent your implants from shifting, provide good healing with a nice contour as well as allow you to sleep with comfort.

6. Avoid underwire bras

Wearing bras with underwire too soon can affect the positioning of the implants and your recovery results. Wear your compression bra instead and wait at least after 6 months to start wearing underwire bras.

7. Dress comfortably

Refrain from stretching or putting pressure on your upper body. Wear comfortable and loose clothing such as garments that do not need to be pulled over your head and follow our breast surgery aftercare tips diligently to heal quickly.
